vFans around the world are grieving the death of rock and roll legend David Bowie. He died Jan. 10, 2016, in Manhattan, surrounded by his family after battling cancer for 18 months. He died just two days after his 69th birthday, on which he dropped his farewell album, “Blackstar.” His death came as a surprise to many, as he kept his cancer diagnosis a secret from the public.

Bowie was responsible for famous songs like “Space Oddity,” “Changes,” “Starman,” and “Life on Mars?” His distinct voice was recognized by many and throughout his metamorphoses between David Bowie and Ziggy Stardust, his voice stayed the same and defined his music as its own unique brand. Bowie’s songs had common themes of space and alien life that inspired wonder in those who listened.

After news of his death, many celebrities and Bowie fans alike  took to social media to communicate their sorrows.  Stars such as Neil DeGrasse Tyson, J.K. Rowling, Kanye West and many others tweeted commemorations to Bowie and paid respects to his family.

Local musician and West Potomac junior, Jimmy Figliola just released his live cover of Starman to bandcamp Jan. 9, the day before Bowie’s death.

“Bowie is one of my idols,” said Figliola. “I was really sad when I heard he died.”

Bowie’s final moments were spent with the ones he loved, knowing that he made his mark on the world as not just a musician, but a person.
