The West Potomac Wire held a Pi Day contest during C and D lunches on March 14, where students competed to recite the most digits of Pi they could from memory. Students who recited the highest amount of digits of Pi were rewarded with apple pie, which was delivered to their seventh period classroom.
March 14 is known as Pi Day, commemorating the non-terminating and non-repeating irrational decimal number pi. Shown by the symbol π, it is equal to around 3.14, hence why 3/14 is Pi Day.
Multiple students were able to name a multitude of digits, but the official crowned victor was Nina Wilcoxon blowing away all other attempts with 101 digits of pi named correctly. Second place went to Douglass, with 75 digits of pi named. The owner of third place, Victor Alvarado, named 68 digits of pi.
Nina Wilcoxon, sophomore said, “In fourth grade, my teacher said we’re gonna have a pi contest to see who can name the most digits of pi so I went home and practiced. I named 42 digits then, and the next year I learned a lot more.”
