Last year, four teams made a run in the playoffs. Girls Lacrosse and Baseball both qualified for the VHSL playoffs. Softball won the Patriot District Championship, and Boys Lacrosse had a deep run in the Occoquan Regional playoffs.
In the 2023-2024 year, the Softball team had a losing record of 4-8, but they were able to put it together just in time for playoffs, winning the district championship and making it to the Occoquan Regional Quarterfinal. Junior Outfielder, Piper Stuckey, believes the key to achieving the success the team had last year is working together. “We practiced really hard, and just came together as a team,” Stuckey said. If the team can work together successfully and play their best softball, Stuckey believes they can go far again.
The West Potomac Baseball team made it all the way to the Occoquan Regional Finals before losing to Lake Braddock during the 2023-2024 season. This followed a 14-12 season. Expectations were not high, but the Wolverines were able to pave their way to the playoffs. Junior Second Basemen, Keller Merchant, believes that this season will be better than the last. “I think we had a lot of good pitching on the team, which is really helpful for the playoffs,” Merchant said. This year, the team is looking to make it back into the playoffs. With the large amount of experience on the team, the possibility is within reach.
The 2023-2024 season for West Potomac Girls Lacrosse came with many highs. Junior Attacker Eve Westmoreland has been on varsity for three years and believes their last season was very good. “We beat Robinson, which is really amazing because we haven’t beaten them in a while,” Westmoreland said. Before the last season, the West Potomac Girls Lacrosse team had not beaten Robinson since the 2018-2019 school year. The way to another successful season, according to Westmoreland, is leadership and communication; this will maintain the team’s momentum in the season.
The Boys Lacrosse team also had an impressive last season. After a 12-7 winning record, the team went on to the Patriot District final and then made a deep run in the Occoquan Region finals. In both playoffs, they fell short of the Robinson Boys Lacrosse team. Junior Defensive Midfielder, Sean Carlson, has been on the varsity team for two years and was a part of the postseason playoff run. “We had a pretty good group of juniors, and now they’re a pretty good group of seniors,” Carlson said. “Now, they can lead the team so we’re looking for a pretty good year.”
