Summertime in film is something that mirrors a dream, it’s fun and light. Summers should be spent outside, but when you’re not or caring for a nasty sunburn in your room, here’s what to watch to inspire you to make your summer just like a movie!
1.Grease
An all time favorite and classic, Grease follows the lives of a greaser Danny and a transfer student Sandy who develop a summer romance. When summer ends, Sandy discovers they both go to the same school, but Danny is very different than he was last summer. Grease is a die hard classic, and a summertime must watch.
2. The Summer I Turned Pretty
The Summer I Turned Pretty is the only show featured on this list, but it’s definitely worth it. It’s a coming of age series following a teenager who spends her summers at cousins beach with her mom, her moms best friend, and her sons. As she grows up she begins to develop romantic relationships with both brothers. This series is filled with drama, fun, and summer vibes.
3. Mamma Mia
Mamma Mia is a musical romantic comedy revolving around Sophie, a young woman about to get married in Greece. She invites three men to her wedding each who could potentially be her father and chaos ensues. It features ABBA’s greatest hits for the soundtrack of Sophie’s life. She is a true dancing queen.
4. High school Musical 2
High School Musical 2 follows Gabierella, Troy, and a gang of high school students, as they get summer jobs at a country club and face countless challenges. Besides the iconic soundtrack, this movie is a coming of age classic.
5. Jaws
Jaws is a thriller classic based on Peter Benchley’s 1975 novel. It starts with police chief Martin Brody who hunts a man-eating great white shark that is attacking swimmers at the beach. It’s one of the greatest films ever made, and will definitely stick with you. Though, thinking of this movie at the beach is not recommended.
6. Almost Famous
A 2000’s classic, Almost Famous tells the story of a teenage journalist who goes on tour with the rock band Stillwater in the 1970s. Starring Kate Hudson, this movie explores themes of family, ambition, and love. It’s sure to make your summer rocking.
7. Ferris Bueller’s Day Off
You’re sure to know this iconic movie. Ferris Bueller’s Day Off follows a high school slacker who fakes an illness to skip school with his girlfriend and best friend. This film is a celebration of teenhood, and the importance of seizing the moment, a great theme of summer.
8. Stand By Me
Stand By Me is a coming of age film that tells the story of four young boys in 1959 who go on a hike and find the dead body of another boy. It’s a great film showing the transition of childhood to adulthood, and it’s a perfect summer classic.
9. Fear Street Part 2
Feart Street Part 2 is definitely the lesser known of the list, but follows a group of teens at a summer camp, who must come together to survive a killer’s rampage. This movie might be for you if you spend your summers at camp, but hopefully it doesn’t inspire you.
10. How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days
How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days is a romantic comedy following a magazine writer who makes a bet that she can get a man to fall in love with her in 10 days, and an advertising executive who makes a bet that he can get a woman to fall in love with him in the same amount of time. As they both try to win their bets, they fall in love with each other.
Although these movies might not all be your summer time favorites, they all mirror what summer should be like. Whether you are watching these in bed, or on a road trip, or at the beach, hopefully you will enjoy them.
