As a senior, I’ve watched students, myself included, dream about graduation day, itching for the freedom that comes after high school. After years of tests, homework, and early mornings, it’s natural to count down the days until we throw our caps in the air. But, before you rush through these last months, I’d argue that senior year isn’t just a finish line, it’s a moment we’ll never get back. We shouldn’t write it off.
First of all, a lot changes during senior year. I’ve seen classmates gain confidence, try new things, and step into leadership roles for the first time. Some of us finally join a club, take a risk in AP Econ, perform at their big game, or just find our friend group after years of feeling out of place. These small moments make a difference, and West Potomac gives us real chances to grow, fail, and succeed in a safe space.
There’s a kind of magic in the “lasts”; last football game, last prom, last time crowding in the hallway with friends. I know it sounds cliché, but it’s real. Even the things we complain about—bus rides, cafeteria lunches, school spirit weeks—are parts of a story that’s uniquely ours. When you’re hustling to apply to colleges or mapping out plans for after graduation, it’s easy to forget to enjoy where you are now.
Senior year is also a chance to leave something behind. Whether it’s mentoring a freshman, giving feedback to your favorite teacher, or just showing up for each other, our choices now actually shape what West Potomac will be for the next class.
I’m not saying don’t look ahead. Absolutely have dreams. But don’t live so far in the future that you miss the present.
For the Class of 2025, this is our time: messy, challenging, and unforgettable. I hope we all make the most of it.
