After years of hard work and dedication, senior Genevieve Cummings is leaping into her final spring Track and Field season. Genevieve is committed to continue her athletic and academic career at Virginia Military Institute (VMI). She is one of West Po’s most decorated Track and Field athletes due to her excellence in the High Jump.
Cummings is one of few West Po athletes to win multiple school sports awards, including this year’s Most Valuable Athlete award for the Girl’s winter Track and Field season.
“I’m very proud to have won multiple awards,” she said. ”It’s an achievement not many can say they’ve gotten.”
Cummings attributes her success to her desire to continue to improve. “Self-improvement is what motivates me,” she said. “I really want to PR [personal record] and become West Po’s High Jump record holder.”
Despite her various trophies and medals, Cummings thanks her team for her love of Track and Field.
“I love my team mostly. While competing is always fun, I wouldn’t enjoy it as much as I do if my team wasn’t there to practice, compete, and celebrate with me,” she explained.
Cummings’s proudest moment of her High School athletic career is her High Jump win at Regionals this year.
“Not only did I win Regionals, but I beat some girls I had never beaten before,” Cummings added.
The West Po community has also played a major role in Genevieve’s accomplishments. West Po Track and Field’s supportive community has helped Genevieve grow into the athlete she is today.
“The community surrounding West Po Track and Field has made me a better athlete and leader. My coaches help me improve and my teammates push me past my limits to excel at what we do.”
