With prices rising along with the temperatures, many students are looking for summer jobs. The newly renovated Mount Vernon Rec Center was expected to open this May, but will reopen this summer, and with that reopening comes many opportunities. The expanded 75,000 square foot Rec Center needs more than 290 people to fill jobs.
“I will be a lifeguard,” Trent Lykling, freshman, said. “I wanted this job because it’s close to the school, year round, and flexible around schedule and sports.” He also shared some nostalgia about the center. “I’m really excited for the new rec center to be opened. I used to go there when I was little and with the improvements being made, it’ll be a staple of our community.”
Charlotte Taymon, freshman, applied for two different positions at the Mount Vernon Rec Center. “I applied a little over a month ago, and I applied to work at the front desk and a lifeguard. I want to work there because it’s close to my house and once I’m able to drive, it’ll be an easy drive everyday. I also love helping the community and kids, and in this position, I feel I can show that. So far I’ve had a reply and have been interviewed over the phone,” she said.
There’s a range of different jobs that will interest various students’ needs and interests as both full-time and part-time jobs are available.
Newly hired swim instructor Rowan Keogh, sophomore, applied because they are good at working with people and had previous experience as a lifeguard. They have already started working and have gone through paid training. “I’m pretty excited to have the job. I’ve already started working and it’s going pretty well so far!” they said.
