Seniors at West Po have the opportunity to apply to many Virginia colleges for free in what is known as Virginia College Application Week. This event runs from Tuesday, Oct. 21 through Friday, Oct. 24. Mrs. Karen Young, the College & Career Specialist, is available during all lunches to help seniors submit their finalized applications, at no cost.
“Students come into the College and Career Center during their lunch, complete a short survey, and then we’re able to give them their codes for their applications,” Mrs. Young said.
This week is meant to provide seniors with the help they need to successfully submit college applications with fees waived. Many students have already been able to find this experience efficient and stress free.
“I think it was really beneficial and I feel like everyone that was helping me was really nice…I thought it was going to be long, but it was really short and I still had time to eat lunch,” Sofia Maytorena, senior, said.
Applying to college is not cheap. Because of the costs associated with it, it can be limiting to students who don’t have the money to apply to the schools that they are interested in attending.
“It can save a lot of money. Application fees can be anywhere between $35 and up to $75. If students are submitting multiple applications, they can save hundreds of dollars…Last year, we had a student save $700 on application fees,” Mrs. Young noted.
Applying for college can sometimes seem daunting, especially when it comes to paying all the fees associated with it. Virginia College Application Week is designed to address this. Make a stop by the College and Career Center sometime during lunch until Oct. 24 to have application fees waived.
