After being closed for almost three years, the Mount Vernon Rec Center finally reopened on June 9, 2025. The newly renovated building is 139,000 square feet and features a new rock climbing wall, indoor track, larger fitness center and so much more. That’s not all though, along with these recreational facilities, the rec center now has different exercise classes you can take, as well as a drop-in child-care for kids.
“My favorite part of the rec center is that it’s bigger and nicer and that there is more gym stuff,” Amelia Elias, freshman, said.
Some of the classes that are offered there are children and adult intro to rock climbing, teen weight training and yoga.
“I like this one class they offered. It was weight lifting for teens, and I thought it was pretty cool,” Elias said. “I think the rec center is great for everyone because every time I go, I see young and old people go there.”
Many students like to utilize the new gym at the Mount Vernon Rec Center.
“I like to go to the gym there a lot with my older sister Eden. I also like the new renovated version of it because I think it’s more different and unique,” freshman Mia Flora said.
Sydney Gillette, a freshman, said, “My favorite aspect of the rec center is the ice skating rink because I love to go and skate with my friends on the weekends. I also like how much bigger it is now. I feel like it’s a really popular spot there.
Freshman Felix Bilski’s favorite part is also the skating rink, “I go and use the ice rink a few times a week for my hockey practice. It’s also a lot nicer to practice in because most of the ice rinks [in the area] are old.
Sophomore Alicia Maytorena has been working at the rec center since the beginning of summer, when she applied for a summer job as a fitness instructor at the gym.
“My favorite part about working at the rec center is that the people are very nice and friendly, and it’s a really fun environment. My boss Josh Allen, he’s a really great guy, and the people at the front desk and fitness attendants are very kind,” Maytorena said.
