May PTSA Meeting
The May PTSA meeting recapped April, which was “Safety and Security Month”. The month entailed 3 back to back assaults as well as a hall sweep which picked up approximately 290 students. Principal Case and Fairfax County officials have responded to this by adding a temporary second School Resource officer as well as increased security with several police cruisers positioned throughout school grounds during the day. Principal Case thanked the Mount Vernon Police force for their extensive support in resolving the recent conflicts and helping to prevent any future altercations. The school also saw a K-9 unit search commence throughout the school catching a total of five students with narcotics. Principal Case also congratulated several volunteers who have helped out in the hallways of West Potomac. These green-shirted individuals help persuade kids to get to class on time by offering a friendly face and often a “Good Morning” or “Good Afternoon” to help reduce stress during the testing season. Although the program has already begun, Mr. Case and the PTSA are still welcoming volunteer parents or community members willing to lend a hand during the school day. Mr. Case also emphasized his zero tolerance policy for attending Prom under the influence of any form of recreational substance. The policy includes severe consequences; any violators will not be permitted to participate in Senior Graduation.
