Battle of the Highway

The West Potomac Wolverines and the Mount Vernon Majors face off today in a football Battle for the Highway. The rivalry between these two teams runs deep, and tonight’s game is set to be a sporting event of the year for both schools involved.

“I expect it to be a good atmosphere,” West Potomac Head Coach Chadwick Louisville said. “Everybody knows each other and the players talk to each other, it’s going to be a fun and festive rivalry game.”

What makes this year’s game even more special is the new hardware involved, with tonight’s winner taking home a belt provided by El Paso Mexican Restaurant–solidifying their claim as kings of route one with a physical trophy for the first time ever.

Junior Gomez, a spokesperson for El Paso, designed the belt to provide another source of excitement for the rivalry that he feels is one of the most storied in the DMV. “When I was in highschool, we had rivals as well. I want to be able to bring that excitement to this community so we can get more people pumped about the game,” Gomez said.

West Po clawed out a 24-21 win over Mount Vernon in their match last year, but the Wolverines come into tonight’s game winners of just two out of their last five meetings against the Majors. Coach Louisville says this fact does not deter the team’s confidence: “We have confidence because we’ve seen and been a part of success.”
