Mary Prater, a senior guard and team captain on the girls basketball team, surpassed the 1,000 point threshold for her high school career last Tuesday in a 43-27 win at West Springfield. She was eight points away from the milestone going into the game before hitting the mark in the third quarter with a top of the key three.

Prater described the relief after scoring her 1,000th point: “I was stressed about it and that I wasn’t going to be able to get it done… people were coming to watch to see if I could do it and then I did it and it was like… okay I finished that,” she said. She explained that being posted on the Wolverine Boosters and Waynewood Elementary School Instagram accounts made the imminent accomplishment feel more real.

Prater boasts an all-time great Wolverine career filled with wins, championships, and unforgettable bonds with her teammates and coaches. “The best part of my season so far has been scoring my 1,000th point and getting to celebrate with my team and all my friends,” Prater said.

Assistant Coach Chris Promen shared high praise for Prater, “She’s both hard working and humble, a phenomenal example for our program,” Promen said.

Prater advises other young female athletes looking to follow her to “work hard, practice hard, and go crazy.” The girls are back in action Friday in a home senior night matchup versus Woodson.

“We’re hoping Friday night sets the tone for a long postseason,” Promen said.
