The Mean Girls Musical adaptation was released in theaters on January 12th. The original movie became one of the most iconic movies of the 2000s, but will the adaptation live up to the same expectations?
Freshman Sadie Regardie doesn’t think so, “I thought the movie was awful,” She believes, “ The movie was unnecessary,” and didn’t live up to her expectations going into the movie. Sadie wishes the movie was advertised better “I came into the movie thinking it’d be like a fun little version of Mean Girls. I didn’t know it was a musical and if I knew it wasn’t a musical I wouldn’t have watched it because I hate musicals.”
The Mean Girls Musical adaptation is based on the 2004 film Mean Girls written by Tina Fey. Fey brought the iconic movie to Broadway in 2018. Some familiar faces will return in the new adaptation of the original Mean Girls movie including Tina Fey who played Ms. Norbury and Tim Meadows who played Mr. Duvall in the original film. Another familiar face is Reneé Rapp who played the iconic role of Queen Bee Regina George on Broadway, now taking her role to the screen.
Freshman Juliet Laisch also didn’t know the movie was a musical going into it. “They sang way too much,” said Juliet. Another controversial topic in the movie was the fashion “I hated the fashion it was giving 2018,” Juliet wishes they kept the iconic Y2K style from the original movie instead of clothes that “looked like they were from SHEIN.”
The original movie was so iconic because of its humor, fashion, and message about the importance of friendship. The original movie still has people talking about it today and is one of the most quoted movies of all time.
