Doctor George Williams teaches World History Honors for ninth and tenth graders. Although he’s been at West Potomac for only three years, Dr. Williams has been teaching since 1993.
Dr. Williams has always known that he’s wanted to go into education, because he grew up in a family full of teachers. “I’m a third generation teacher. My grandmother was one [a teacher] and then my mother. So was my dad. So teaching kind of came naturally to me.”
He’s originally from Liberia where he did his undergrad in economics at the University of Liberia. He later decided to move to the United States to get his masters in International Development at the School of International training at Vermont and eventually his PhD at Walden University.
“My passion is actually international development with a focus on education. I want to work in communities with failing schools and help them grow.”
After completing an internship at the World Bank, Dr. Williams decided to become a teacher in Fairfax County. He previously taught at Edison High School, but came to West Po after he heard stories about West Po’s amazing reputation.
“I wanted to get that experience, get to know new people, and just get a feel of a new environment.”
Dr. Williams tries his best to stay involved with his students. He stays involved by supporting student’s interests, like sponsoring the Geography club, and by making his history classes engaging.
“My favorite thing about teaching is just seeing students grow and succeed. There is no better environment [To grow and succeed] than in education.”
Outside of school, he enjoys playing soccer and cheering on Liberia’s soccer team with his family. On the weekends, he loves to kayak and spends time outdoors.
Dr. Williams’ advice for all students at West Po is that, “The world owes no one anything, and so we should treat every step of the way as a privilege we’re given. Make the most out of every situation; see every situation as a learning experience and expand.”
