Is this the year of the women at the 2025 Grammys? Women are leading the way in next year’s Grammy nominations. 2024 has been a massive year for women in pop, with female artists claiming six out of eight nominations for both Album of the Year and Record of the Year. The dominance of all these women is making headlines as artists’ display interesting ways of thanking their fans and drama surrounding the nominees chosen for specific categories.
Leading the nominations, to no surprise, is Beyonce. Beyonce has a total of eleven nominations, which brings her total tally of Grammy nominations to 99, the most of any artist. Beyonce’s blockbuster album “COWBOY CARTER” is what has made her a front runner in categories such as Album, Record and Song of the Year.
Fans are taken aback by Beyonce’s reaction to her nominations. Most expected that Beyonce would express her gratitude through social media, which surprisingly did not happen. Beyonce unexpectedly congratulated Linda Martell on her nomination and her contribution to country music. Although Martell was deeply influential towards country music, she is a lesser known artist. Many fans do not know of Martell, and are very surprised that Beyonce dedicated an Instagram post to her. Martell was featured in “SPAGHETTII”, a hit song in Beyonce’s album, “COWBOY CARTER”. “SPAGHETTII” was nominated for “Best Melodic Rap Performance”. Beyonce most likely congratulated Martell because they worked together on that song, but Shaboozy was also featured on that song, and did not receive any recognition.
It wouldn’t be the Grammy’s without Taylor Swift. Swift was nominated for six categories this year. Three of which are for “Fortnight”, her song featuring Post Malone in her new album “The Tortured Poets Department”. Swift’s album is very controversial around teens. “I don’t think that [Fortnight] should have been nominated, it’s a bad song.” says Freshman Lucia Lakatos. “[Fortnight] charted, which is why the song has so many nominations” Lakatos adds.
Chappell Roan and Sabrina Carpenter are making big moves in the pop industry. Both Roan and Carpenter have been nominated for the four general, cross genre categories that have collectively come to be known as The Big Four: Album of the Year, Record of the Year, Song of the Year and Best New Artist. In the history of the Grammys, only 13 artists have been nominated for all four categories in the same year. Out of those 13 nominees, only two have ever swept the competition, including Christopher Cross in 1981 and Billie Eilish in 2020.
As previously stated, Carpenter is nominated for Best New Artist. This year, Carpenter released her new album “Short n’ Sweet” which reached over 4 billion streams on Spotify. Although Carpenter performed very well this year, this nomination has brought confusion to many people, as Carpenter is not a new artist. She has been producing music for around ten years now and has had many hit songs throughout the years. Previous winners like Victoria Monet and Olivia Rodrigo have won this category in the past, even though they have been producing music since the 2010’s.
“brat” summer is officially over, or is it? Charli XCX received seven Grammy nominations for her new album “brat”. “brat’ is a very debated album throughout the pop world because it is remarkably different from the ‘normal’ pop being produced. “Charli is an underappreciated artist and she has been in the music industry since 2008, she is deserving of a Grammy,” Freshman Lucia Lakatos commented. Charli is just now reaching her peak in the music industry, because of her very successful album. “brat” became a large trend on social media, which grew her albums popularity. Although, not everyone loves this new kind of pop. “I don’t think that Charli deserves to win because I don’t really like her music,” Freshman Annabelle Lee said. Even with the disputed opinions, it’s impressive how much “brat” has taken off in just 5 months.
