Groundhog day is a fun, slightly silly, holiday that takes place every year in Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania on February 2nd. The date was picked because it is the middle of the winter season, and every year Punxsutawney Phil, the town’s resident groundhog weatherman, predicts whether or not the next six weeks will be filled with snowy or spring weather. Unfortunately, Phil’s predictions are usually 40% accurate so it’s best not to get hopes too high when he makes his final call. Legend has it that in the 136 years that the ceremony has taken place, there has only ever been one Phil, but since groundhogs only ever live up to six years in the wild, so who knows if that’s true or not. Celebrate the upcoming holiday by singing the Groundhog Day song, or watching the Bill Murray movie “Groundhog Day.” Currently, it seems that we’re in for 6 more weeks of winter, but hopefully Phil’s trend of inaccuracy continues.
