Local Athletes Earn Spots on Team USA for the 2026 Winter Olympics
The 2026 Winter Olympics began on Feb. 6 to the 22, spanning across all of Italy. Milan will host the ice sports like hockey and skating while the mountain city of Cortina will host sliding and curling. There are expected to be almost 20 sports competing in the Olympics like skiing, snowboarding, ice hockey, and figure skating. This year’s Winter Olympics will also feature new events like the skeleton mixed team and ski mountaineering. Expectations are high for the American team as always, and with local athletes competing in this year’s events, the DMV is sure to be represented.Â
Ilia Malinin is a Virginia native, being born in Fairfax and attending George C. Marshall High School. Going into this year’s Olympics, Malinin is a two time World Champion (2024, 2025), three time Grand Prix Final Champion (2023, 2024, 2025), four time U.S National Champion along with many other alcaldes. Malinin comes from a family of skaters, with both of his parents representing Uzbekistan in their skating careers. While Malinin is young, he is devoted to the sport of skating. At the age of 21, Malinin is the only skater male or female to have successfully landed the quadruple axel, skating’s most difficult jump, in competition. Malinin won gold this year in Team Figure Skating.
Another athlete from Fairfax, Virgina, is Brandon Kim, who graduated from Thomas Jefferson High School for Science and Technology. Kim is a short track speed skater who has won bronze at the 2017 World Junior Short Track Speed Skating Championships. Short track speed skating is when athletes race on a small indoor oval at fast speeds in order to complete a certain number of laps in the least amount of time. Kim will compete Tuesday at 5:10 AM.
Competing in the newly introduced skeleton mixed team, Mystique Ro, is from Nokesville Virginia. Ro was a former track and field star running at Queens University in Charlotte, she transitioned into the skeleton after a college teammate introduced her to the sport. Skeleton is a high-speed winter sliding sport where athletes race head-first, face-down, on a small sled down an icy track. Athletes start with a sprint and steering with subtle body weight shifts to achieve the fastest time, showcasing immense courage and precision as they navigate turns at speeds over 90 mph. This year, the mixed skeleton team is newly introduced to the Olympics. It follows the same premise as the normal skeleton sport, but both a man and women from the same country slide down separately and their combined times determine the winner.
