West Po soccer is starting their season strong, securing four wins in the first four games. The winning streak included a rivalry match against Mount Vernon, in which West Po came out on top, 2-0. With the season off to a strong start, many sources, including Nova Athletics, ranked West Po first in the district and region, and consider the team a competitive contender for states this year. The team is looking forward to the games ahead, with an impressive 7-1 record as of this week.
After coming up short in last year’s regional finals, West Po is looking to avoid another heartbreaking defeat. In that game, the team fell to Robinson, 2-1, in a close match. West Po was at a disadvantage due to a red card issued to its head coach in a previous game after he argued with a referee over a controversial call. As a result, he was not allowed on the bench during the regional final game. Had that not occurred, the outcome might have been different.
However, things may be different this year, as West Po is coming off a 2-0 win against Robinson, a key victory in a competitive Patriot District. The team has several standout players working together effectively. Star players Jack Coulter and Josue Diaz have taken charge, each scoring four goals this season, with Coulter scoring in the recent Robinson game. Both captains remain committed and focused as they prepare for a postseason run.
“This team is really talented, and I believe that we can win states this year,” Coulter, junior captain, said.
While the season yielded notable wins against competitive opponents, the team still faces challenges that could affect its success. Early in the season, the team accumulated eight yellow cards and two red cards, resulting in two player suspensions. While cards are not uncommon in soccer, they could impact the team’s chances at states. Fairfax County has implemented new NFHS rules that include a yellow-card accumulation limit. Players who receive four yellow cards during the regular season must miss a game, which could affect postseason play. The rule applies only to Fairfax County schools, meaning teams such as Alexandria City are not held to the same standard.
This puts West Po at a disadvantage against non-Fairfax County teams. Additionally, with 10 total cards so far this season, the team is now on the VHSL’s radar, which could result in postseason ineligibility. That would prevent the team from competing in district, regional and state games — a major risk for a team with championship aspirations.
Moving forward, the team is preparing to limit penalties and play more disciplined soccer. CJ Taylor, the varsity head coach, emphasized the importance of control moving ahead.
“We need to be careful in the upcoming games,” Taylor said. “We can’t afford any more offenses, so we need to play smarter.”
Taylor is encouraging players to stay aware of the situation and trusts them to make better decisions during games.
The team remains cautious, but optimistic as the season progresses. With momentum in the team’s favor, West Po looks to continue its winning streak as it prepares to face Alexandria City this week.
“The team is hyped and ready for the season to continue,” Josue Diaz, senior captain, said. “I know that we’re better than every other team in this league as long as we stay focused.”
