West Po Boys Varsity soccer team is coming off a blowout win over Fairfax ending 5-0. Senior midfielder Diego Moreno scored a hat trick, three goals in one match, leading the West Po to victory. With the loss, Fairfax was eliminated from the playoffs, ending their season early. West Po now advances to the first round of regionals, where they will face a determined Justice team. With both teams’ seasons on the line, this game will surely be one to watch.
After being eliminated by Robinson in the first round of Districts, the West Po wolverines bounced back for regionals determined to make a statement. Players have been practicing hard to prepare for their upcoming game in the first round.
“We’re in better shape than we’ve ever been all season.” CJ Taylor, head coach of the West Potomac men’s team, said. The team has been seen practicing everyday, besides gameday, working to improve their game.
West Po faces Justice today in their first regional matchup. In their last appearance together, the score ended 2-0 with West Po coming out on top. Justice finished the regular season with a record of 4-6 in their region and 7-7 overall, finishing sixth overall in the region. While Justice were not viewed as one of the region’s standout teams, West Po knows not to underestimate any team from now on. After losing to Robinson in the first round of Districts, the team is determined to prove just how talented they are this season.
“The region thinks we aren’t a threat, but that’s going to be their biggest mistake.” Taylor said.
The stakes remain high for West Po, as now every game in the regional tournament is win or go home. In order to further qualify for the state tournament, West Po needs to at least make it to the finals, win or lose. With this goal in mind, the team is focused on defeating Justice and advancing on to the next round of regionals.
“We can’t go into this game relaxed like Robinson. Anything can happen and our season could end just like that.” Jack Coulter, varsity captain said.
