West Potomac Varsity Girls Basketball Off to an Impressive 7-1 Start
The defending Gunston District Champion West Potomac Wolverines are off to a 7-1 start and rank sixth in the state per maxpreps.com, which is good for the highest mark among non-undefeated teams.
“The preparation that we built up from the past few seasons is how we got to where we are as of today, having such a great start to the season,” said Senior Guard and Team Captain Danea Mackey. “We all came in with the mindset of only moving forward and getting better and I think that has made a huge impact.”
Multiple dominant performances highlight the Wolverines’ 7-1 record, including a 70-22 win at South County, a 56-27 win against Lake Braddock, and a 68-28 win against Mount Vernon.
“I don’t necessarily think that we are always aware of how big of a lead we have. We just continue to play our game, and our game is to push the ball and score,” said Mackey on how the team has been able to run away with games and blow out their opponents.
The team is currently on pause due to COVID-19 precautions but their next scheduled game is slated for the 27th on the road at Hayfield. The Wolverines will look to knock off the Hawks and extend their win streak to five.
“We keep working no matter what,” said Sophomore Forward Julia Hopper, “Even if a game gets canceled, we keep pushing and striving for the best.”
