Early voting for a proposed redistricting constitutional amendment in Virginia will begin Friday, March 6. This amendment will appear on the ballot as a referendum, which means it will be decided directly by the people, and if it wins a majority of the votes it will be adopted into the state constitution.
The proposed constitutional amendment would redraw Virginia’s congressional districts. Supporters say the changes could create more Democratic-leaning districts, potentially shifting the current 6-5 Democrat majority seats in Virginia for the US House of Representatives to a 10-1 Democrat-Republican split.
Although early voting begins Friday, the actual date of the special election is April 21, 2026.
Early voting locations for each county can be found on the Virginia Department of Elections website.
Students who are eligible to vote but have not yet registered can register online, or in-person on March 17 and 18 in their government classes with the League of Women Voters. The deadline to register to vote in this special election is April 10, 2026.
According to the Virginia Department of Elections, voters must be 18 years old or “any person who is 17 years old and will be eighteen years of age at the next general election shall be permitted to register in advance and also vote in any intervening primary or special election.”
This means that students that turn 18 on or before Nov. 3, 2026 and meet all other eligibility requirements can vote on the referendum in April.
