Senior Ashley Firesheets

Sending student-athletes to play their sport in college is something West Potomac does annually. Two athletes that have had their hard work recognized and are wanted at the next level are featured in this article. Both athletes are in season, playing a spring sport.

Ashley Firesheets, a senior at West Potomac, is committed to playing lacrosse at the University of Mary Washington. Firesheets committed verbally in May 2021. She has been playing lacrosse since she was in first grade. Firesheets has made an impact on the team since she was a freshman, being a four-year varsity starter. On what the hardest part of her recruiting process was, she said, “Deciding where I wanted to visit and which coaches I wanted to talk to.” Firesheets ultimately decided on Mary Washington since it’s close to home, not too big, and she liked the coach. “Meeting new people who share an interest in playing lacrosse and playing at the next level,” Firesheets said on what she is looking forward to in college.

Junior Brody Shawn

Brody Shawn, a junior at West Potomac, is committed to playing baseball at Wake Forest University. Shawn is a top prospect in the class of 2023, and after his dominant summer pitching, he was rewarded with being the 98th ranked player in the country (via Perfect Game). He committed to Wake Forest in July 2021. He has been playing baseball since he was eight years old. “The deciding factor to commit to Wake was having what I want in a school and the coaching staff,” Shawn said. When asked about what made him become the athlete he is and what advice he has for other athletes, he said, “Those extra lifts and workouts got me to the point I’m at. For other athletes trying to go to the next level, keep grinding and work when no one is watching,” Shawn said. Due to the COVID pandemic during his freshman year, which canceled the high school season, Shawn has only played one full season and says, “I’m looking forward to continuing the varsity experience and chasing glory with my teammates.”
